Planting and garden beds that last

Northridge Landscaping builds and replants garden beds for homes across Dallas and the northern suburbs, with soil prepared for North Texas clay.

Why do plants struggle in Dallas clay soil?

Most of the Dallas area sits on dense Blackland Prairie clay. It holds water after a storm, cracks wide open in August, and leaves new roots either drowning or baking. Plants dropped into a hole in that soil often fail in their first summer.

We dig the bed out, work in compost and expanded shale, raise the grade a few inches so water drains away from the foundation, and plant for the light each spot gets. Every bed is finished with edging and three inches of hardwood mulch to hold moisture and keep roots cool.

How do I water new plants in a Texas summer?

For the first eight weeks, water new beds two or three times a week on drip or by hand, early in the morning, checking the soil a few inches down first. After that, most established natives get by on the twice-weekly schedule. Top up mulch each spring.
